2009 Catalina Channel Crossing
US Championships
This year marks 50 years of paddling in California and the 50th Catalina Channel Crossing!

The first outrigger race held in California was on September 20, 1959. This first race was a long distance race from Avalon on Catalina Island to the Newport Dunes inside the California Coast. The famous Duke Kahanamoku served as the Grand Marshall of the first California Outrigger event and founded the Catalina to Newport Dunes race – the original California Outrigger Classic.
The first race involved two canoes shipped to California from Hawaii. Now in 2009 more than 1,000 canoe paddlers from around the globe are going to be competing in the 2009 Catalina Channel Crossing US Championships the weekend of September 12 and 13, 2009. Please visit the SCORA Catalina Championship website for more information on the history of this epic event in california paddling history.
